Bible Scriptures On Money Problems
Full disclosure: we've been hit hard financially recently, so we're living on Bible verses for financial struggles. We are still trying to learn how to operate with me being home with the kiddos and not having my full-time income anymore. On top of that, we are living in medical bills galore! It seems like there is one illness after the other, and a complication or two right after that. It can be easy to lose faith in times like these – to say, "Come on, God. Give me a break, here!" While I won't lie and say I haven't said those exact words a time or two, I will say that I wouldn't make it through this without my faith.
When I start feeling overwhelmed, worried, anxious, or just stressed out about bills and money, I look to these 10 pieces of scripture for financial hardship. Praying over these Bible verses about money worries makes my life so much easier. If you need the same prayer, use it. I highly recommend it!
1. Matthew 6:31-34
"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
A portion of this scripture is possibly one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. I'm sure you know that I'm referring to "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you…" Every time I read this verse I think of the hymn that goes with it. It's a good song and I truly love that verse. Having said that, when I am experiencing financial problems, the part of these verses that I cling to is the last part:
"…do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
So, when I'm stressing about how we're going to pay the next medical bill, I turn to this series of verses. I am reminded that tomorrow is tomorrow's problem, but even then, God is with me.
2. Phillippians 4:19
"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."
God will meet your needs.Needs. I trust in Him to provide our needs. Our wants are something else entirely. If you think that bible verses for financial help will help you get everything you want, turn to God in prayer. He can help to remind you of what you need.
3. Luke 6:38
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Despite the frequent misinterpretation of this verse, I felt that it should be included. If you read the passage leading up to this verse, you can probably tell that it isn't all about money. This verse doesn't saygive money and you'll get money.
In truth, Jesus is talking about forgiveness. So, why include this verse if it has nothing to do with my financial woes? Imagine forgiving a debt. You could really use that money that so-and-so owes you right now. But forgive that debt, and your debt will be forgiven as well.
4. Proverbs 3:9-10
"Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine."
Tithe. He will take care of you.
This is one I personally struggle with. Mathematically, it doesn't make sense for me to give my money to the church when I have bills I'm struggling to pay. God says to give anyway. I've got you.
5. Matthew 6:26
"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
I personally love this one because I had never thought about it in this way prior to reading this verse. Birds don't have a worry in the world. And yet, I am the daughter of a King and worry on the regular! Why? I am more valuable to Him than the birds and their full stomachs, so trust that He's got this.
6. 1 Timothy 6:10
"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
This verse reminds me to consider my attitude toward money and the truth. Do we really need the money, or is it just something that I'm greedy for? Could I cut something out that we don't need? Listen to what is important. What does my family need? Focus on that.
7. Acts 20:35
"In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
Even when I'm struggling, there is someone out there that I can help. Instead of focusing on what might help us to make ends meet, do something for someone that has it harder than I do. It is enlightening and freeing.
8. Phillippians 4:12-13
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
The last part of this passage is very popular because of the motivational aspect. It is one of my own personal favorites. However, the first portion of this gives context that not a lot of people are aware of. Whether I am struggling or at peace, happy or sad, hungry or fed, I can get through it because of my God who gives me the strength I need.
That context helps me to apply the verse to financial struggles. I can do this because of Him.
9. Matthew 7:7
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
Pray, pray, pray. If I fail to pray, I am not asking for what I seek. I am not knocking at the door. Pray and He'll listen.
10. Mark 10:27
"Jesus looked at them and said,"With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
I saved the best for last! When things look impossible – when you can't imagine where you're going to get the money for groceries or keep a roof over your head – God intervenes. I have experienced this time and time again. Because of that, I have faith that it will be taken care of this time around, too. If I can do that, so can you!
